![]() ![]() I am aware that there are drawbacks to an outright ban, not the least of which is that it removes structured, supervised opportunities for teenagers to learn how to develop healthy relationships with their phones. Instead, state policy would do the work of telling students and parents, “No.” This would take the onus off teachers and administrators to enforce individualized prohibitions. ![]() If students need to bring a phone to school, they can check it in with the front office before first period (phone lockers are a thing). The best way to initiate this shift would be for the California Department of Education to issue policy guidance stating that phones should not be accessible to students during the academic school day - in other words, ban phones from classrooms. Instead of placing the burden on individual teachers, we need to shift the culture of schools to the point where having a smartphone in a classroom would be akin to smoking in one it just wouldn’t happen. And yet individual teachers are somehow supposed to prevent teenagers from using these devices? It’s absurd. All these factors implicitly encourage students to bring their phones with them to school. Consider, for a moment, all the actions and decisions that lead the average student to show up to class with a phone in their pocket: the billions invested in software and hardware development the research devoted to figuring out how to keep users engaged the choice by individual parents to allow their child to have a phone. What’s been bothering me lately is that everyone knows this, yet as a society, we willingly allow - or more accurately, encourage - high school students to bring what are perhaps the greatest tools of distraction ever created onto school campuses every single day. Smartphones and social media apps are designed to capture users’ attention. Second, and more important, teachers should not have to police smartphone usage in the first place. This kind of power struggle creates more problems than it solves. I’ve had students storm out of my room and even cuss me out when I’ve demanded they hand over their phones. In my own time as a teacher, almost all the serious conflicts I’ve had with students have been over phones. ![]() Like the rest of us, students are intensely attached to their phones even if you successfully confiscate their phones, you risk damaging your relationship with them. One might reasonably object: Why not just enforce no usage policies as stringently as my colleagues and I did? That’s not a solution for two reasons.įirst, policing phone use leads to power struggles that harm teacher-student relationships. You cannot pay attention to anything else when you are looking at your phone. A number of high schools have done exactly that - and who can blame them? Smartphones stand in direct conflict with the mission of educational spaces. They’re so problematic that I believe it is time to ban them from school altogether. I share this story, however, not as a scale-up solution, but to illustrate just how problematic phones are in schools today. Within days of rolling out the new policy, phone use in our classes effectively evaporated. We kept track of student infractions across our classes and referred any student who had their phone confiscated more than once to the administration for follow-up. We warned students at the start of every class, and after that, we confiscated any phone we saw during the period. Trying to solve the problem, we collectively enacted a zero-tolerance smartphone policy at the start of spring semester. But it was happening many, many times within a single class period, and the resulting distraction was decimating students’ ability to focus on academic tasks. Instead, it was a more under-the-radar sort of usage: checking their phones in repeated bursts - to fire off a quick text or read a notification or, in some cases, watch a quick TikTok. The problem was not that students were scrolling through social media feeds or openly playing Clash Royale. ![]() Last fall, my grade-level colleagues and I faced a problem: Smartphone usage in our classrooms was rampant, and we struggled to rein it in.
![]() ![]() Within the standard studio system that has thrived since the 1920s, if you had an idea for a film, you would have to go submit your screenplay to a studio or production company. I think crowdfunding is an important trend to take seriously because it already has done significant work to change the landscape of film as we know it. One of the most successful Hollywood scale projects funded through Kickstarter was a film based on the popular TV show Veronica Mars, which garnered over $5 million. Notable indie directors who used these new platforms include Zach Braff and Spike Lee. That’s where crowdfunding comes into play sometimes. In short, studios have lost faith in original ideas and therefore any filmmaker who has one of those needs to look elsewhere for money. In the short 5-6 years that crowdfunding websites have existed, the film industry has turned more and more to “safe filmmaking.” What I mean by “safe filmmaking” is remakes, sequels, adaptations, remakes of adaptations, sequels of remakes, and comic book films. Crowdfunding has now become a viable alternative to the Hollywood studio financing. ![]() This Orson Welles example is the most extreme example in the recent trend of established filmmakers turning to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo to fund their projects. The campaign itself mentions that “Orson would constantly experience the heavy scissors of studio heads and financiers time and time again on his subsequent films despite being labeled a ‘wunderkind’ for his early achievements.” Famously during the production of Touch of Evil, Welles wrote a 58 page letter to Universal politely requesting changes to their cut of his film. As it seems, the artist-studio struggle which plagued Welles his whole career has followed him beyond the grave. ![]() Surely financiers, somewhere out there in the ventricles of Hollywood, could scrounge up a couple million for one of the greatest artists to grace the medium. Avengers: Age of Ultron had a budget of $250 million. Although this is noblest of causes, I have to wonder why the film’s resurrectors needed to turn to fan donations to fund Welles’ lost masterpiece. I only bring up Welles because two weeks ago an Indiegogo campaign was launched by a number of producers (including Peter Bogdanovich of Last Picture Show fame) to finish Orson Welles’ last film The Other Side of the Wind. Without knowing anything about the movie, you understand that they’re talking about something supremely influential.ĭon’t worry, this is not a Citizen Kane article. You probably heard in some context that “X is the Citizen Kane of Y”. You’ve still been gripped by the influence of Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane. Let’s say for the sake of argument that you’re a mole person or something and have never seen a movie before. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now follow the step-by-step guide below to transfer contents between Mac and Android. I’ve been spoiled by some more authentic versions available in San Jose, but this comes close to being a worthy contender. The Bun Bo Hue noodle soup ($9.95), which contains a pork-based broth with various cuts of meat, was a strong attempt. A traditional dish that is not often served in restaurants, the vinaigrette could have been more acidic, but the textures of crunchy shredded banana blossom and slippery beef tendon were complimentary with the generous helping of mint. The banana blossom with beef tendon salad ($9.95) was an interesting combination. These were somewhat generic but tasty, with the flat triangular egg rolls being the best of the bunch. Spring roll halves, battered fried shrimp, chicken wings and triangular-shaped egg rolls come in four cuts, each with a viscous fish sauce and sweet and spicy dipping sauce. For small groups, the Tick Tock appetizer platter ($14.95) is good to share. Al dente noodles evenly covered in butter garlic sauce and paired with juicy grilled pork is a sure winner. ![]() Pho Tick Tock has a knack for fusion style dishes, and the buttery garlic noodles with grilled pork ($9.95) was excellent. Once is probably enough when it comes to deconstructed pho, as the assembled version offered here costs $9.95 and will give the same taste. It was fun to dip everything in the broth, and the stone bowl kept the broth hot for longer, but the broth was on the bland side. The idea is to add items to the broth as you eat for maximum freshness with each bite. A single combo meant for one person comes with broth served in a stone bowl, noodles in a separate bowl, and a neatly arranged display of meats and sauces. I figured there must be something to this hot-pot style pho if it warrants a $15 price tag, compared to the average $7-8 for regular size pho at most restaurants. But the Do-It-Yourself craze never fails to attract curious eaters, and I’m no exception.Īlmost 2 years old, Pho Tick Tock has been well received. Pho’s popularity relies heavily on the comfort of being served in a piping hot bowl with the requested combination of meats layered on top of fresh noodles. It typically doesn’t fare well in terms of flavor and is inexplicably more expensive than the assembled version. But luckily Bandai Namco has confirmed with IGN that it sees a future for the Little Nightmares property. Of course, everything about Little Nightmares 3 remains a mystery at the moment - even its potential existence. The story of Little Nightmares 3 could thus finally give the lore behind why the Thin Man was created, why the Lady ran the Maw, and why the Guests on the Maw go there to eat children. ![]() Furthermore, the Little Nightmares comic shows that the backstory of the Lady running the Maw involves her fear of the Thin Man. It would only be natural for the game to follow Six encountering him again. Six is responsible for creating the Thin Man due to her betrayal in Little Nightmares 2, and he seems to be at the center of everything wrong with the world of the games. Players may feel emotionally drained while they fear what comes next, have to pause at seeing something their brain innately dislikes, or from sheer panic after failing an intense set piece multiple times. This adventure should clearly have to do with the Thin Man. Little Nightmares 1 and 2 differs by excelling at creating a creepy, unsettling atmosphere that leads to unease and a fear of what comes next. Scary is a subjective measurement, and feeling scared or fear will be dependent on what you personally find scary or frightening. On the other hand, sequences like the maze towards the latter half of the game offer an immersive puzzle experience that'll make the player ask why the rest of the game wasn't the same. Being able to find the solution, in some cases, depends on the player's personal curiosity and problem-solving abilities rather than indicators accurately laid out by the game. Unfortunately, Little Nightmares 2 can seem infuriating when the game refuses to indicate what the player needs to do to progress. Part and parcel of a puzzle game is having an intuitive way to give completion hints to the player. The controls often feel counterintuitive when placed into intense situations, as we often ran in a slightly different direction than was meant due to camera changes, controls being unresponsive with directional input, and more. However, throughout the game, these moments feel tedious instead of awe-inspiring the same can be said about the various chase scenes in the game. We imagine this style of combat was deliberate as to enhance panic and cause the player to frantically fight not only with the enemy but themselves as well. Controls often feel outlandishly unintuitive with delays in button press and swing speed. Still, we can't help but feel as though they are a secondary mechanic. The implementation of combat mechanics certainly adds further depth to the gameplay. Mono can wield almost larger than self weapons and take the fight to critters that would otherwise squish him. Most popular community and official content for the past week. Together with new friend Six, he sets out to discover the source of the Transmission. Little Nightmares 2 places greater emphasis on the protagonist's ability to fight back by implementing more combat mechanics that were absent in the previous title. Little Nightmares II is a suspense adventure game in which you play as Mono, a young boy trapped in a world that has been distorted by an evil transmission. Little Nightmares 2 mixes up the mechanics Accompanied with the eerie music, these set pieces often cause enough panic to see you wiping your hands on your shirt to dry them. Very few games are able to capture the feeling of dread like Little Nightmares 2, with their beautiful yet often fear-inducing backdrops that make the player feel small, dreading every step forward. You take on the role of a young boy who wakes up in a dark forest, where a spider is trying to kill him. Through various set pieces in a different locale, players must bash their way through obstacles in front of them and work with Six's AI to overcome puzzles preventing progression. The monochromatic Limbo is close in spirit to Little Nightmares, especially since its dark, cinematic, and abjectly terrifying. Little Nightmares 2 continues the feeling of helplessness by throwing the player into intense, high-stakes hide-and-seek situations. ![]() |
